Weekly Music Entertainment Blog #41

So it appears another musician has been getting "swindled out of their cash."

It has been reported that rapper Drake has been loosing out on millions due to Young Money & Cash Money Records not paying him his Royalties.

To think that this young rapper had nearly every label knocking his door trying to poach him and then he chooses Young Money & Cash Money Records and he gets treated like this - it is such a shame.

The man who brought all of this to light is James "Jas" Prince, the son of Rap-A-Lot Records CEO J. Prince who discovered Drake is suing Drake's Management Company "Young Money & Cash Money Records", after alleging that he is owed a share of Drake's royalties. Jas also claims that Drake has  been ripped off and produced documents proving this.

The lawsuit states that in 2007/2008 Jas discovered Drake on Myspace and introduced him to Lil Wayne, Bryant, Young Money Entertainment and Cash Money Records Inc. Jas claims that there was an agreement to split the profits associated with Drake's success and to this date he has not been paid a a single cent.

I have heard hundreds of these types of stories where musicians are getting ripped off and I always urge musicians to seek legal advice before signing away their life or better still to purchase books such as "All you need to know about the Music Industry" by Donald S Passman.

I studied Music Business/Production as I took my future in music very serious- as the saying goes "knowledge is power."

I really hope that Drake can sort out this situation - so sad :(

Nas 'Life is Good" promo video

Nas' "Life is Good" debutes on top of the Billboard 200 chart.

Nas has had a few rough years with a lot of negative press further to his divorce with singer Kelis and alleged unpaid taxes exceeding $6m.  I am pleased to see that his music is getting the recognition it deserves.  I have always felt that he was underrated!
